The Portal Gun (or the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device) is a handheld teleporting device from the popular game Portal. The gun was built by a company who specializes in movie props and it was auctioned off for charity. Lucky for us though, they posted detailed pictures of the entire build so we can learn from the pros.
Using brush on molds, the main parts were shaped with a general purpose casting resin. The middle barrel was fashioned from a PVC pipe and MDF for the front. The acoustics and illumination for the prop are given careful thought as they create the cool effects: The gun turns on with a ‘boot up noise’ and there are separate sound effects for the blue and orange portal beams. The precise finish makes the prop very close to the original.
You can either bid for it at the charity auction or build one yourself. The complete build process of the replica gun is available with step by step photos.
